That night on the desert sounds fascinating. Going to house sit for a friend outside of Santa Fe in a few weeks at the edge of a national forest, so it feels pretty remote. I'm probably more of a city boy at heart but will use your inspiration to try to take advantage of the space and silence there for writing. She also doesn't have a TV, and I suffer without a TV. Probably a Pavlovian thing.
Here's a cool Miles Davis quote: "Music is the space between the notes."
Can't totally explain that, but it sure feels in the ballpark. And Miles could be very spare with his notes, standing up there with his trumpet for minutes it seemed, then playing the three perfect notes. I really prefer that kind of jazz over the more gymnastic versions.
As an aside (but related), I'm happy to hear you have an Elvis portrait. This gives me a exvcuse to share that (the) Tim Curry years back once bought me an Elvis wall hanging. (That fact is more interesting than the story.)
Love that quote and may borrow it because next week happens to be about silence/sound!
Sadly we can't remember what became of the Elvis!! I thought she had custody of it and I think she thought I had it all these years. Priceless and maybe gone?!
I like local TV, and surfing. Stupid local commercials for personal injury lawyers ("It's easy with Montesi" some happy clients sing in a Memphis commercial), then a dumb game show. That's good TV to me, low commitment and cheap action.
Sorry to hear of your missing Elvis. Elvis objects tend to roam and/or collect. Not your fault, or a slight from Elvis. I ended up with three Elvis busts and never bought a one of them.
The beginning reminded me of my youth growing up in the Finger Lakes - one of the most beautiful places on the planet and one that profoundly shaped me.
Ahhh this was very peaceful to read. I hope the quiet and space and time offer you the reset you need. Feel free to call or text though whenever you need a little break in the quiet!
I love the way you are learning to float on the river instead of battling the currents.
Love how you put that!

In lieu of TV, perhaps podcasts?
