I kind of tripped and fell into my first home purchase. I bought immediately after the Global Financial Crisis - not because it represented a great opportunity, but because I was only just barely starting to live like an adult. Oddly though, pretty much nothing happened w/the price until the pandemic. Then, things went nuts.
By then, we had already settled into our new home and were toying with the idea of landlording. We had a great tenant we got along with, but it was still crappy. Fortunately, though, that meager income helped me to hang in there until it was very easy to sell. I doubt I can do anything that financially successful again any time soon, and maybe never.
Property can be the best investment and perhaps also the most stressful. Glad you did well with it, even if trippingly. I'm a little addicted to the concept that I could potentially keep trading up like this (just one more time in some years?) until I get my real vision of a full 10 acres with its own little stream. Ok if there's no proceeds for me in this; I measure life by the proximity to stream.
Property ownership and business ownership really change your perspective on things, you know? Suddenly, you have all this wealth tied up in..,. like, in an idea of how things might go. Yikes!
But also: exhilarating. Liberating. Awesome.
It's definitely a double edged sword, but for me there are more pros than cons of living the life I want. If I get frustrated, I look over at someone suffering in corporate hell or something and feel way better.
Okay, I LOVE My Neighbor Totoro, probably more than my children, but it's become a sentimental marker for me of them as small children. Congratulations on the treehouse and of making possible what seemed like an impossibility! Please can we have a picture of the pipe tree? I cannot imagine what you are describing and the closest I can come up with are the blue glass bottle trees that are common in some parts of the American South rooted in the traditions of Africans and enslaved African Americans. Thank you for the reminder, to breathe in and breath out - and then turn it on it's head!
Oh me too about Totoro and my younger kid memories! I did think of those bottle trees when I did this, but those might be prettier ;) The tree is rustic but completely fabricated from a porch post with pipes attached from when I removed all the gas lines from my house and thought they were too useful to discard. I just have to add some metal leaves to finish it. Torn whether it's meant to stay there or it's ok to "unroot" it... but the tree is only partially from parts of the property. I do love these projects! I guess I can't attach a pic here, so here it is in an old post about me cutting off all my gas lines - https://sleepyhollowink.substack.com/p/the-era-of-the-heat-pump-is-here
I was so thrilled this morning to see this post! I’m pretty sure this means I’m famous now.
One straightforward example of tonglen-on-the-spot I always think of is holding the space for a crying baby or tantruming toddler: breathe in the panic; breathe out the calm.
Wow, you've been busy! Always been the DIY girl. I'm impressed. I'm so not wired for such daring-do's. Good luck with it all!
P.S. Maybe I'm doing a type of meditation different than most folks now. Been doing it for decades. Basic stilling the mind and mantra stuff, the the mantra has really faded.
Thank you, I always feel it's crazy at the time and then in retrospect exactly what needed to happen.
I'm pretty sure everyone's meditation is really unique and personal. Whatever works for you! I haven't find the path yet to calm. I don't think anything but a treehouse for the next four years will really help.

I do not want to bring this crying baby into my meditation practice, ha. And yes, very small level famous! Thank you for the inspiration!

Easier to visit you with a bit of running water and zip lines!! Congrats!
I figured! My rain water isn't for everyone so it's truly a miracle I had two interested buyers. Can't wait for you to come
