Thought it was great. I have some minor quibbles but they don't register against how creative and smart and fun it was. Also, pink. Very pink. Crazy pink in a theater. Margot Robbie is great. Been a huge fan since "I Tanya," and the next two times I saw her on the screen I didn't realize they were all the same woman. Also (thank God) they allow some complexity and pathos toward men through Ken so it's not a "Men bad/Women good" movie at all. The whole thing's pretty subversive, really. Which is fun! And pink!

Glad it hear it - especially "subversive". I may just come around since it's my daughter's birthday in a few and though she claims to have zero interest, I'm sure she would love it and it does seem like the insane set design is worth seeing on the big screen. But dammit I don't own any pink and I'm NOT ABOUT TO. So I'll be a weirdo in Black for that.

Honestly, if there's any way, this is one to see on the big screen. The visuals are both over the top and pure Barbie at the same time. No need to wear pink as the movie screen will be in pink overload without an assist from you. In fact, you'll be helping bring balance by not.

The Barbie movie is such a fascinating cultural study. I had little idea that perceptions of Barbie were this contentious, growing up only hearing the negative-stereotype aspect, and being acutely aware of how damaging that was, especially as I embraced a punk rock lifestyle for a few years.

On the other hand, my partner (Alley) grew up playing with Barbie dolls, but she kind of tore their bodies apart, so... yeah, these toys meant very different things to different people.

Go figure: I played martial arts with my own GI Joes.

Although I remember only having a few dolls, when I cleaned out my parents' house of unlimited items, there were so many Barbies and some of them headless. Origins unknown since I know I didn't play with all that. I thought there'd be a good art project in there of just Barbie parts but I wasn't prepared to make that happen. There's always a Barbie terrorist in every household! One of my daughters was kind to them, the other mangled them. Definitely to each their own. Thanks for reading--GI Joe perspective equally important.

I wonder about GI Joes the same way people wonder about Barbies influencing later behavior. Is that why I cheered on Operation Desert Storm when I was like 15?

Or are all 15 year olds just dummies?
