In Texas, we will be right in the path and school districts are taking the day off. Take that Sleepy Hollow ISD! I am bummed though as I will be China :(
Lol, I love that you’ve identified the shadow chasers as your prime dating demographic! I support this!
My daughter’s school district is making sure all kids and teachers get to watch, and glasses will be provided, but I’m allowing her to stay home so we can do it together, with one of our other daughters who has off from community college classes
Glad you will enjoy with your girls! Who knows - maybe my three pairs of extra glasses I just scored will be my ticket to saving some sad sack from blindness at least :)
Reading this from Geneva, New York where we have decamped to in order to experience totality. I guess I’ll write an excuse for my son on Monday morning. I’m so disappointed that the schools are so blasé about this! The science teacher who says “we have to study for a quiz” illustrates STEM-centric utilitarian mindset that has forgotten about the importance of sheer wonder at our place in the universe. For myself I’ll be watching less for science (though that is cool) and more the the poetry of the moment.
In DFW, which I will be traveling to on Sunday for other reasons, the media is promoting it 10x. They say, "Stock up on groceries!" They say, "Fill up your gas tanks!" Gosh, I hope I manage to get there! And hopefully Dad will have enough frozen and canned food and TP to get us through.
In the meantime, if anyone's been looking for an excuse to read Annie Dillard's "Full Eclipse," You're not going to get a better one than this. After I finished I felt like I'd dropped acid. Just, for my sensibilities, an amazing piece.
I wanna write about eclipses soon (not really any connection with this particular one, but if I can get it out there tomorrow or Monday AM, it might be a nice compliment).
I also really, really wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid! I was pretty confident it would come true one day.
We’re getting a half day of school mainly bc the district doesn’t want the liability of forcing kids to wear the glasses and then getting sued by an irate parent when they have eye damage cause they snuck a peek. So I appreciate the early release so families can do this together. I ordered my glasses late lol but they’re supposed to arrive today!

ah shucks. But kudos to TX for taking it off. I can't even convey how mad I am that we give no F's over here..
I would be too!

Yes to the poetry and wonder of it! I’m so jealous you’re going the distance. Enjoy!!!

that's totally it, the liability. Wish they would just say that and let them go! I'm way too excited ;)
