The Regurgitating Lady
Exploring the circus-freaky word posters of artist Janice Kerbel
As a writer, I like visual art that happens to also include words. As a weird woman, I love these word posters by Janice Kerbel that turn traits I relate to (shyness, lie detection, infatuation with everyday objects), into larger than life circus acts, such as:
The Regurgitating Lady, who welcomes “back with a gasp…coins, shoes, glasses, keys, hats, umbrellas, diaries…”
A handful of Janice Kerbel’s posters can be seen up close on Pietmondriaan.com.
Some plain-text clips of my favorite bits, but you have to see her originals to see how it’s all in the arrangements since I don’t want to infringe on any copyrights with my font choices:
BASHFUL SINCE BIRTH… IN THE VERY CORNER OF YOUR EYE CATCH A FLEETING GLIMPSE OF THE SHYEST PERSON ALIVE
Or:
THIS POLYGRAPHIC WONDER PERFORMS THE MOST DELICATE BALANCING ACT, SWOONING, IN THE FACE OF ANY UNTRUTH… FAINTGIRL
Or:
HERE TODAY—GONE TOMORROW: THE REGURGITATING LADY THIS REMARKABLE BEING WHOSE EMETIC POWER ALONE HAS EXCITED THE IMAGINATION OF ALL THOSE WHO HAVE LOVED AND LOST, AT LONG LOST RETURNS — A GOLD WISHBONE | A PORCELAIN FIGURINE | A DOG CALLED MAGGIE… THE MUNDANE AND THE VALUABLE; THE ADORED AND DISCARDED. COINS, SHOES, GLASSES, KEYS, HATS, UMBRELLAS, DIARIES
